Mudjacking vs. Polyurethane Foam Lifting

There are two mainstream ways to raise a settled residential slab, and homeowners researching the repair run into a lot of one-sided writing about them. Most of it is published by companies that run one method, which means the comparison is usually written to arrive at a predetermined answer. The honest version is less dramatic: both methods lift slabs, both have been doing it successfully for a long time, and neither one is the correct answer for every job.

Mudjacking pumps a cement-based slurry under the slab. Polyurethane foam lifting, often called polyjacking, injects a two-part expanding structural foam. The differences that actually matter to a homeowner are material weight, hole size, cure time, price, and how precisely the lift can be controlled. Below is what each method does well, where the tradeoffs are real, and what to ask the contractor who shows up at your house.

Mudjacking: heavy, dense, and long proven

Mudjacking pumps a slurry of cement, soil or sand, and water through holes drilled in the slab, roughly one to two inches across. The mix is dense and heavy. It fills voids by sheer volume, and it raises the slab as the pumped material builds pressure underneath. The method has decades of track record behind it, and there are a lot of driveways still sitting where a mudjacking crew put them many years ago.

Its real strengths are volume and cost. When there is a large void to fill, moving a lot of material into that space is exactly what the method is built for, and the material itself is inexpensive compared to polyurethane. Mudjacking is usually the lower-priced of the two options for a comparable job, though pricing varies by contractor, region, and site conditions.

Its real tradeoffs are weight, hole size, and cure time. The slurry adds meaningful weight to the soil that already failed to hold the slab up, which is a genuine consideration on weak or saturated ground. The holes are large enough that patches are clearly visible, which matters more on a stamped patio than on a service walk. And the material needs time to cure before the surface carries load, so return-to-service is slower, and heavy rain during the cure window can complicate a job.

Polyurethane foam: light, fast, and precise

Foam lifting injects two liquid components that react and expand into a rigid structural foam. Injection ports are small, about the size of a dime, and the reaction begins within seconds. The foam expands to fill the void and then continues to develop pressure, which is what lifts the slab. Cure is typically a matter of minutes rather than hours.

Its real strengths are weight, control, and speed. Cured foam is dramatically lighter than a cement-based slurry, so it adds very little load to soil that has already proven it cannot carry much. The small injection ports patch to a much less noticeable mark, which is why foam is often favored on decorative, stamped, or stained flatwork and on pool decks where appearance matters. Because the operator can inject in short bursts and read the response immediately, foam supports very fine incremental lifts, which is useful when a slab has to come up a precise amount to match a neighbor or a threshold.

Its real tradeoff is price. Polyurethane material costs more than a cement-based mix, and foam jobs are usually the higher-priced option for a comparable slab. Whether that premium buys you something depends entirely on your site. On weak soils, on decorative surfaces, or where you need the driveway back in service immediately, it can be money well spent. On a plain service walk over decent soil with a big void, it may be paying more for advantages your job does not need.

Material weight matters a great deal on soft ground and very little on firm ground. Why the recommendation you get may reflect the truck in the driveway

This is the part worth knowing before the first contractor arrives. Many concrete lifting companies run only one method. The equipment, the training, the material supply chain, and the insurance are all built around a single system, and a company that has invested in one rig is not going to recommend the other one. That is not necessarily dishonest. A crew that has run the same system for years is often very good with it. But it does mean the recommendation you hear is partly a description of what that company owns.

So ask the question directly and without any edge to it: why does this method fit my slab? A contractor with a real answer will point at something specific about your site. Weak or saturated soil, a decorative surface where hole size matters, a very large void where volume is the issue, a need to get vehicles back on the driveway immediately, or a precise lift needed to meet a garage threshold. A contractor whose answer is only that their method is generally better has told you about their business, not about your concrete.

It is also fair to ask what happens if the lift does not achieve the target height, how they will handle a panel that resists, and what they will patch the holes with. Method matters less than operator judgment on most residential jobs. A careful crew with a slurry pump usually beats a careless crew with a foam rig.   • Nobody looked at where water goes around the slab
  • You are told the result will be permanent or that the slab will never move again
  • The quote arrives without anyone walking the slab and probing for voids

Which method is actually better?

Neither one wins across the board, which is why the comparison keeps going. Foam is light, cures in minutes, injects through much smaller ports, and supports precise incremental lifting, but it usually costs more. The right answer depends on your soil, your slab, how far it has to come up, how big the void is, whether appearance matters, and how fast you need the surface back. That combination can only be judged on site, which is the honest reason no article can pick for you.

Does the added weight of mudjacking material really matter?

It can, and it is one of the few tradeoffs in this comparison that is genuinely physical rather than a matter of preference. A cement-based slurry is substantially heavier than cured foam, and it is being placed on soil that already failed to support the slab above it. On firm ground with a straightforward void, the added weight is usually not the deciding factor. On soft, saturated, or poorly compacted soil, it is a fair thing to raise with the contractor and ask how they accounted for it. A contractor who has thought about your soil will have an answer ready.

The contractor only offers one method. Should that worry me?

Not by itself. Most concrete lifting companies specialize in a single system because the equipment and training are expensive, and specialists are often very skilled with the method they run daily. What matters is whether they can explain why that method suits your specific slab rather than defaulting to a general claim of superiority. Ask what they saw on your site that supports the choice, and ask what kind of slab they would decline to lift with their system. A contractor who can name the limits of their own method is usually giving you a straight answer.

Will the holes be less noticeable with foam?

Generally yes, and on decorative flatwork that difference is the whole argument. Foam injects through ports about the size of a dime, while a cement-based slurry needs holes roughly one to two inches across. Smaller holes patch to a smaller mark. That said, no patch is invisible. Fresh patching material does not match the color or texture of concrete that has weathered for years, and the marks stay findable on close inspection with either method. If your slab is stamped, stained, exposed aggregate, or otherwise decorative, say so early and ask the contractor to show you the planned hole locations before any drilling.
